Executive Committee Member Profile: Shaun Bona, Social Media Host

Shaun Bona

Following a San Francisco stint about a billion years ago, Shaun settled in Ottawa where he initially worked for Supply and Services Canada, later and fortuitously recruited to work in the House of Commons during The Right Honourable Jeanne Sauvé’s sweeping overhaul of the House’s finances and administration.

Shaun joined IDRC as a Finance Analyst in 1984. Following several positions in Ottawa as a Division Accountant, Treasury Officer, and Program Services Manager for the President’s Office, he was appointed the Controller for the Regional Office in South Africa until 2001. Then, up to 2013, Shaun was the Regional Controller for IDRC’s Office for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Shaun has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History from the University of New Brunswick and Saint Mary’s University, a Financial Management Certificate from Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology, a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation. In April 2014, he was admitted to membership as a Certified Professional Accountant.

Shaun presently resides in Bedford, Nova Scotia. Since his relocation back to Canada, he was involved in the Nova Scotia Syrian Refugee Resettlement Program and, via the Halifax Public Library program, tutored English to newly arrived immigrants. Soon after, he volunteered at Northwood/Ivany Place Care Home and is currently a Nav-CARE / Hospice Halifax client resource.

For several years, Shaun has been heavily immersed in compiling his family’s forebears, tracked as far back as the 17th century. He is an avid reader of all genres having published over 80 reviews.

Without any reservation, The highlights of Shaun’s career are his IDRC tenure during South Africa’s democratic transition (his heart is fastened to Mpumalanga) and the phenomenal IDRC Think Tank Initiative.

Shaun has travelled extensively in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

P.S. Boxers Winnie and Graça (named after two of Nelson Mandela’s wives) are Shaun’s never-ending treasures.
