We have learned of the death of Connie Freeman, former Regional Director of IDRC in Nairobi. Connie cared very much about IDRC staff and stayed in contact with several of us over the years.
According to a LinkedIn post: “I regret to inform you that Dr. Constance Freeman passed away on November 4, 2023, in Maryland, surrounded by family and loved ones. Plans are still in the works for a celebration of her life to be held in January of 2024. Please keep her friends and family in your heart, as they cope with loss and reflect on her wonderful spirit and significant contributions to our world. – Family of Dr. Constance Freeman.”
Connie was very “pro” African agency in her teaching of African development and in her work at IDRC. “Constance Freeman is proud of the African character of IDRC’s work in the region. The regional office has often taken the advice of African partners, she says, and recognizes that the ownership of the research rests with the people who are carrying it out.”
