The municipal archives of the City of La Malbaie have been thoroughly searched. A total of 2,760 elective mandates have been identified in the City of La Malbaie and in all the former municipal entities that are now grouped under the City of La Malbaie — La Malbaie Parish, Sainte-Agnès, Saint-Fidèle, Pointe-au-Pic, La Malbaie Village, Cap-à-l’Aigle and Rivière-Malbaie.
This new book presents 152 mayors who were elected more than 400 times in the 12 municipal entities that existed in La Malbaie between 1845 and 2025. It includes an appendix that lists the outcome of 2,357 councillor elections. Virtually all families in La Malbaie will be able to find an ancestor or acquaintance who dabbled in municipal politics. The book allows us to better understand the family relationships between the elected officials of each municipality. It also presents a “genealogy of municipalities.”
It has been said that “such a specialized work has little chance of becoming a bestseller, but it will certainly become a must-read in all historical research on the region. It can be described with certainty as a fundamental reference work.”

The author, Sylvain Dufour, has deep roots in La Malbaie. His great-great-grandfather Roger Dufour was part of one of the first cohorts of municipal councillors (1858–1863). Each generation of Roger’s descendants includes an elected municipal official, until the brothers Louis-Philippe, Lorenzo and Tancrède Dufour in the 1960s. Sylvain is busy exploring little-known aspects of La Malbaie’s history.
